THINK ... Churchward Spraying
for the upcoming season
Flocks do well even
in 'testing' weather
By TERRY KARATAU
Sale in sight: These Motu-nui Hiwi Stud two-tooth rams will go on sale in December.
Reporting on Motu-nui Hiwi, Donald
Fannin said he is very impressed
with how the sheep are handling the
weather patterns that have been
thrown at them.
''The ewes are run under
commercial conditions along with
the lambs and hoggets; in fact, I
think I push them harder than the
commercial flock to test their
constitutions because I don't want
to breed a sheep that needs to be
pampered to perform.''
This year there was no tail end in
the stud mobs.
''If a sheep lags behind in any way
I will cull it from the stud mob and
''I cull sheep that have excess dags
and we have a minimal drenching
programme in place to try and
breed a worm-tolerant sheep.
''Last summer was very testing for
us. Basically we had three dry spells
with good rain in between.
November/December was very tricky
and with no fresh grass at this time,
I decided to wean all my lambs. We
weaned all stud lambs this year at 85
days old and they weighed an
average of 26.24 kilograms -- this
figure includes my stud hogget
lambs, which were weaned at 45
days old. This is a good seven kgs
behind our five-year average
They did manage to catch up over
the summer period and at tupping
the ewe hoggets weighed an
average 45kg at 18/5/11. All ewe
hoggets are single sire mated and
this year the 114 hoggets scanned
111 per cent and docked at 106 per
The mixed age ewes averaged
72kg and the 2ths were 65.5kg (68kg
overall) at tupping. Their weight was
56.92kg at weaning.
Scanning results for mixed aged
ewes -- 184 per cent -- 2ths 177 per
cent making 181 per cent overall.
''It continues to impress me that
our sheep have the potential to
grow and recover well with limited
feed over the summer periods.
''We have built up our number of
recorded ewes again this year and
now have 380 ewes and just short of
100 hoggets lambing this year.''
Motu-nui Hiwi has 200 ram
hoggets for sale this year. One
hundred were bred there and the
other comes from Jason Le Grove at
Motu-nui, from Masterton.

available here for this season to
