off their stuff
The Taihape club stalwarts Duane Dick and
Kerry Wells displayed their fighting qualities on
the last hole to ensure the club remained in A
grade for 2013.
The team drew 6-6 with Tawhero in a nail-
biting encounter that seesawed throughout the
day at Feilding.
After the morning foursomes the team settled
for 2-2 with Koke Cashell and Ben Cribb in
command throughout for a 4/2 win. Denny
Thompson and Matt Thomas led by three holes
at one stage but a series of birdies against them
saw the lead change and they eventually lost
3/2. Duane Dick and Gary Thomas didn t start
well and never recovered. Kerry Wells and new
number one Matt Booth trailed throughout their
game but a three hole spurt near the end
secured victory 2/1.
In the afternoon, singles with a few light
showers to overcome, Ben Cribb and Koke
Cashell led the team out to give Taihape the
early advantage both winning 4/3. Denny
Thompson struggled against the accurate
Tawhero player as did Matt Booth both losing
4/3 and 5/4 respectively to balance the ledger.
Gary Thomas put up a determined display but
Despite five birdies in his round, Matt
Thomas couldn t shake his opponent and with a
wide tee shot on the last hole, which he lost, had
to settle for a half. It came down to the deter-
mined Duane Dick and in form Kerry Wells to
save the team. Dick went down the last even in
his game, hit the green and two putted to pull off
a win after his opponent found the sand.
Next it was Wells turn. He needed to birdie
the last for the draw. He drilled his wedge to
three feet from the pin and completed the for-
mality to halve his match and gain the team
The side improved on last year s standing to
6th resulting in Whanganui being relegated to B
Despite all the players scoring over 36 points
and a couple on 42, a presidents trophy team all
lost to some unbelievable scoring from the
Hawkestone players going down 8-0.
Back home Merv Tiepa was too good for a
compact field shooting 41 points five clear of the
consistent John Booth.
